Striped Bass, Flounder, Squid & the Fun of Fishing Close to Home

One of the things I love most about life near the water is that some of the best days don’t require much planning. When you have a boat right outside your back door, you can load up the fishing gear, head out for the day, and see what the Jersey Shore waters have in store for you.

This year, my son has certainly made the most of it!

From a beautiful striped bass to flounder and an incredible haul of squid, his fishing adventures are a perfect example of why the boating lifestyle is such a special part of living at the shore.

A Beautiful Striped Bass

There’s something about that first photo that says it all—the open water, a beautiful day, and the smile that comes after a successful catch.

Fishing from a boat gives you the opportunity to experience the Jersey Shore from an entirely different perspective. Once you’re out on the water, the busy pace of everyday life seems to disappear. Whether the fish are biting or not, there’s something special about spending a day surrounded by the bay and ocean.

Of course, catching a striped bass like this makes the day even better!

And Then There Were Squid!

One of this year’s more memorable catches was squid—and quite a lot of them.

I love these pictures because they capture another side of fishing that we don’t always think about. The adventure doesn’t necessarily end when the boat comes back to the dock.

In this case, the catch came home, everyone got involved, and before long those squid became a platter of freshly prepared calamari.

That’s about as fresh as dinner gets!

Flounder Close to Home

Flounder are another familiar part of fishing around the Jersey Shore, and I especially like the photo of the two fish sitting right beside the boat and fishing rods.

To me, that photograph represents one of the biggest joys of lagoon living.

The boat is there. The fishing rods are ready. And another day on the water can begin just a few steps from the house.

There’s no long drive to get to the boat or complicated planning required. You can leave the dock, enjoy your time on the water, and eventually cruise back through the lagoon to your own backyard.

More Than Just Fishing

Of course, owning a boat at the Jersey Shore isn’t only about what you catch.

Some days are for fishing. Other days might mean cruising the bay, meeting friends on the water, heading somewhere for lunch, or simply taking a ride and enjoying a beautiful summer afternoon.

That’s what I find so appealing about lagoon living—the water becomes part of everyday life rather than something you have to plan a trip to enjoy.

And there are plenty of days when the best part isn’t the fish at all. It’s the time spent together, the stories that come home with you, and the memories you make along the way.

The Lifestyle Behind the Waterfront Home
