A Perfect August Beach Day in Surf City

Yesterday was one of those beautiful August days that reminded me why I love the Jersey Shore so much. I spent some time on the beach in Surf City, where the sky was a brilliant blue, colorful umbrellas dotted the sand, and the Atlantic stretched as far as I could see.

The beach had that familiar summertime energy. Families were relaxing under their canopies while kids played in the surf, rode the waves on their boogie boards, and built sandcastles along the shoreline. One of those classic summer days filled with simple pleasures and happy memories in the making.

I went in for a swim, and the waves made it even more fun. There is something about diving beneath a wave or catching one back toward shore that brings out the kid in me!

While I was enjoying the water, I started thinking about why we get waves that are so much fun for swimming, bodysurfing, and boogie boarding. Surf City is located on Long Beach Island, a barrier island with its eastern shoreline facing the open Atlantic Ocean. Being on a barrier island doesn’t actually create the waves, but it gives our beaches wonderful exposure to ocean swells.

Those swells are formed by winds and weather systems over the Atlantic. As they approach LBI, the shallower ocean floor and our shifting sandbars cause them to rise and break near the beach. The tide, wind direction, and location of the sandbars all help determine whether the ocean will be calm or give us those rolling waves that are perfect for riding back toward shore.

Of course, ocean conditions can change quickly, so I always pay attention to the lifeguards and stay within the designated swimming areas.

To me, this is what a typical August day at the Jersey Shore is all about: warm sunshine, soft sand, refreshing ocean water, children laughing in the surf, and a little time to slow down and appreciate where we live. These are the days that become some of our favorite summer memories—and one of the many reasons Long Beach Island will always have such a special place in my heart.
